My father and I are planning to attempt to build a pair of D size guitars over
the course of the next year. We are not guitar builders by any means
so it will probably prove to be a disaster but that's ok. It's the
Father / Son bonding time that really counts I don't see the old man that often!. Anyway we have purchased
2 books for the project.


Guitarmaking by Cumpiano and Netelson
and
Classic Guitar Construction: Diagrams, Photographs, and Step-By-Step Instructions

and we have our wood on order from Shane Neifer over at High Mountain Tonewood. So I just wanted to stop by and say hello, my guess is I will be asking for help soon!.

This is a great place. The best place to start your construction.
Shane has some nice Zoot. Never feel intimidated to ask questions.

HAve fun with your dad. After I went to Roberto-Venn and got a job building guitars, my father went to the guitar making class with Harry Fleishman. He now builds guitars as a hobby in his garage shop. His buddy asked him why he wanted to build guitars and he told him it was to be close to me. Still chokes me up now. This should be a great activity for you and your dad. Have Fun!!!

Welcome aboard Alan. I would warn you that this is an addiction, but, well, its too late. The wood is on its way. You and your dad will have a great time. While the wood is sticked, getting acclimated to your shop, why don't you spend some time in the archives nosing around. There are so many bits of wisdom hidden in threads its amazing. You never know what gem you will find in a thread. It may or may not have something to do with the title directly. Lots to read, lots to do. Do hesitate to post a question.

Welcome! You will enjoy the OLF forum as it is a friendly and family environment that offers tremendous a tremendous learning experience with support. I have learned a great deal here about wood, building, and understanding what it takes to make a good sounding guitar. You might start by saying that you and your father will be building guitars over the next year and that your expectations are for decent looking and sounding instruments. I am currently building my first guitar (for my father) and those would be my expectations. The OLF members offer so much information and support that I would not be surprised if this guitar is one of the best my father has played or seen. I don’t say this out of conceit but because the resources are so good here that my limited skills will not get in the way of success. It sounds like you are starting on the correct path so go forward with confidence. Never hesitate to ask questions if you don’t know or to report (with photos) if you have problems. The folks here are both willing and capable of providing help to cover almost any situation. You might also consider getting guitar building DVD’s from two of our members: John Mayes and Robbie O’Brian. This would be an easy way to learn with your father instead of reading the material separately.

Thanks for all the encouragement. Funny you mentioned some of you mentioned pictues. We plan documenting this adventure in great details. Log books for hours and money spent, many photos, etc. I will keep you guys posted!

Hey!!!! Some NC people. I was born and raised in Greensboro. I live in VA now but am moving to Hillsborough, NC in about a year, right near Graham, NC. Good to see some building in the south.
